Purple Corn Extract Anthocyanidins

"Black pearl" purple corn is an important raw material in food and beverage industry.

Purple corn gets its deep purple color from anthocyanin, an antioxidant. Recent studies have found that purple corn's antioxidant properties have health benefits. We are seeing a continued rise in interest in natural colours, particularly in the US, where some leading companies have vowed to remove artificial ingredients from their food and beverage products. The majority of food and beverage products worldwide that contain purple corn use purple corn extract, accounting for 63%.

As more and more exotic plants are discovered in Peru, it seems that the country is beginning to attract the world's attention as a super food kingdom. Peru's unique climate and varied topography make it a unique home to thousands of food products. Some of the more well-known super foods that are getting a lot of attention include the energizing Maca, the Ginseng known as Peru: Sausenia, a plant that produces a low-calorie syrup, and mayonnut, a low-glycemic index super fruit that can be used as an all-natural sweetener.

Long consumed in Peru and Argentina, purple corn has recently emerged as a super food upstart, capturing the attention of global food and beverage markets. According to mintel global New Products Database (GNPD) analysis, four out of five foods and drinks containing purple corn in Peru are fruit drinks. Outside Peru, purple corn is commonly used as a food rather than a drink. From November 2010 to October 2015, nearly half of the food and beverage products containing purple corn were snacks, mainly potato snacks and corn snacks.

One important thing to note, though, is that the use of purple corn remains very small, with only a handful of products using its ingredients ever marketed, including popcorn, powder or extract. Overall, as more Peruvian super foods emerge, we will continue to see a growing interest in locally produced foods. Purple corn, which is considered healthy and authentic, has a lot of growth opportunities in the market, and the recent surge of interest in natural colors in particular represents a new opportunity for purple corn extract.
